Calling this garbage is an insult to trash. If I want to be lectured on how "bad" men are, I'd watch CNN. Don't waste your time. Worst movie I've ever seen. Just watch the 2006 remake. Imogen Poots She sure does, man. Don't we all. Ignoring the obvious misandry and not to talk about the politics itself, a brick to the face has more subtlety than this movie. If you want to portray the kind of messages you could at least do it with an ounce of grace and nuance. That's the general thing with politics and hard topics in movies, the audience doesn't want to be told how they should be feeling about the subject.
The camera work is the next worst thing that sticks out to me, especially one forced zoom-in to keep a cultist out of the shot was noticeably bad.
I've never seen the older versions of Black Christmas, but I think this is the worst movie I've ever seen.

Don't bother with this film, it's awful from the beginning and probably one of the worst films I've ever seen. Don't bother. I screamed when I saw Colby Brocks video in this, my lord I love it! I cant wait to see this. The director literally said, politics over plot. Right then I knew this movie was gonna be bad.

When you search for free movies, advertisements from paid platforms are really higher than the sites that offer free movies. Although this is a search engine problem, it is a serious problem that people cannot find what they are looking for. Users who search for free movies should visit the sites that offer really free and full movies by downloading the page a little bit down or moving to the second - third page. It is possible to watch really high-quality movies grouped under various sources with the Watch Free Movies search. The richness of the quality options and the dubbing options for those who desire is the biggest advantage of the sites that offer free movies. The fact that there are more than one paid platforms and not all of them publish every movie strengthens the hand of the sites that publish the movies for free.

I don't understand the message. We discover that Serial Killers should learn to be less sexist. First few seconds: oh this'll be a nice cute song! Beat drops* oh. I'm ADDICTIVE to this😭❤️. Just saw this movie tonight & damn the trailer pretty much was the entire movie, this shouldn't even be called Black Christmas considering it has nothing to do with the original story of the 1974 & 2006 version. This is a standalone film waaaaay off from its counterparts. Didn't like tge plot, so boring & during the first 30 minutes of the movie only 1 person gets killed, the rest is talk talk talk talk & trying to get us more connected with the cast of characters. The girls are boring anyways & you pretty much beg for them to be killed off but very slow movie & the ending... Laughable, a few people walked out of the theater halfway into the movie... It was pretty bad.

No offense, but it upsets me that people are making scary movies about Christmas. Christmas is about the celebration of having a good time with your family and/or friends, not about a case of crime or people getting killed. But most importantly Christmas is about celebrating Jesus's birthday for he gave up his life to save all of our lives. If you are reading this comment and are getting upset that I'm religious, all I ask is to not give out mean comments about my beliefs for this is just an opinion that I thought everyone should realize. I just hope one day that people will realize that sometimes you should give scary movies a break for it's the season to be joy not scary things. Cuz Halloween is over now, it's Christmas's time to shine. I'm not saying that you should believe what I'm saying, all I'm saying is just an opinion and that's all. If you are reading this I ask that you have a great Christmas and to stay safe out there. Have a wonderful day everyone 😅👍.

Loved seeing you in Val DIsere as I also ski there. Also know one of the owners of Cocorico for the Tignes side.

Politics Before Plot was actually a good explanation of what happened in this mess. First, this is very loosely Black Christmas. Second, it's not just feminist propaganda but really preachy propaganda. This was trash and an utter insult to the brilliant original. I watched this with my wife who thought it was a parody. My only hope for this movie is gone. I thought at least it would make for a gory Christmas slasher, but it's confirmed it is rated PG-13. I am watching this tonight!can't wait!looks geat. But now we know everything. Blumhouse generally make effective cheap horror films. Black Christmas is an absolute disgrace to the original, having hardly any connection to it. #me too feminist crap, no gore, few scares, make proper horror 18 certificate films and stop wasting our time.

John ! merry Christmas, Brandon and to all of your subbers. This film made the 'Prom Night' remake look Oscar worthy. How this got screened in cinemas, let alone made, is the eighth wonder of the world. See this really good. 219, 900 songs 69, 000 artists 95, 300 episodes, movies and games The Internet’s best source for music from TV and movies since 2005 Copyright 2020 Tunefind LLC. I'm glad that Jumanji: The Next Level having a sequel.

At the same time making them as comprehensive and different as could reasonably be expected. With their series of victories, Wonder Studios has had the option. To get the absolute generally fascinating and sought after movie producers. Stars to proclaim their movies. Perhaps the greatest oversight in Wonder Studios’ program of on-screen characters is A Quiet Place star Emily Obtuse. One of the most mainstream stars of the most recent decade. Emily Gruff has cut a name for herself as a main star on account of movies like A Quiet Place, Edge of Tomorrow, and Mary Poppins Returns. Emily Obtuse was once tapped to play Peggy Carter and Dark Widow. Lamentably, she gave the two jobs because of various reasons. With one of them being booking issues. At that stage, the Wonder Studios machine wasn’t the certain fire hit it is viewed as now. So we can’t accuse A Quiet Place star Emily Obtuse for passing on the two jobs. Notwithstanding, presently that Wonder Studios has substantiated itself. Maybe Emily Gruff is thinking about joining the family. She would not join? While this is only talk. Emily Unpolished’s star power is certain. She would be an ideal fit for Wonder Studios. A Tranquil Spot followed a family’s battle to make due in a dystopian world. Possessed by extraterrestrial animals with an intense feeling of hearing. Which constrained people to stay quiet so as to abstain from turning out to be prey. The story finished up with Emily Obtuse’s Evelyn Abbot getting ready to take on the animals. As they attacked the home she took cover in with her kids. Spouse in the wake of finding an approach to crush them. A Quiet Place: Section 2 reunites aficionados of the main film with the Abbott family. They are a normal American family attempting to get by in a prophetically calamitous scene drained of sound. You know simply commonplace American life. A Quiet Place finished up with the Abbott family getting another feeling of expectation. As the fight among beasts and people proceed. A Quiet Place: Section 2 will before long hit theaters. So it’s the ideal opportunity for an update on a portion of the significant subtleties of A A Quiet Place. Before A Quiet Place: Part II – 5 Things To Remember From The First Movie. That is given below: The Abbott Family Has Experienced Great Loss It’s a year later, and the Abbott family is as yet managing the agony of that misfortune. Regan feels separation among her and her dad. She stresses that he reprimands her for the occurrence. So as to ensure his family, Lee appears to be fixated on getting some answers concerning the beast. Evelyn is likewise now pregnant with another infant. Which may have been a choice made on account of Playmate’s demise. By the end of A Quiet Place, the Abbott family experiences another great loss. This time, Lee dies. The Monsters Are Weakened By High-Pitch Noises At the determination of A Quiet Place. Regan and Evelyn become familiar with the key to devastating the beasts: high recurrence sounds. The listening device that Lee made for Regan proceeds to glitch. It conveys criticism, high pitch clamors, that just Regan and the beast can hear. Regan sees that the criticism harms the beast. She at that point enhances the sound by putting the gadget on an amplifier. This debilitates the beast, making it become perplexed. And causing it to lose its defensive layer shell. Which empowers Evelyn to execute it with a shotgun. The Abbott Family Is Crafty The Abbott family created techniques and abilities to make due right now. Indeed, even with the threat of an infant and its tumult. The Abbott family prepared and accumulated instruments, supplies. And strategies to shield the child from pulling in the beast. The Abbott family had a whole framework in play for different circumstances. That may emerge because of the sound and the beast. The Abbott family’s cunning should become possibly. The most important factor much more with them out and about in A Quiet Place: Section 2. People Can Be A Threat A few people are conceivably attempting to endure. Yet it’s obvious from the couple in the principal film. That this the truth is a significant strain on individuals. This could imply that the sorrow and torment of others’ rights. Now present issues for families like the Abbotts, who are simply attempting to all endure. A Quiet Place: Section 2 trailer presents Cillian Murphy’s character. He is by all accounts one of those individuals managing a ton of weight right now. This could imply that he could display a peril to the Abbott family. Or he could be somebody who has managed different people who have been dangerous. The condition of mankind since the beast attack is by all accounts. A significant bit of A Quiet Place: Part 2’s story line. The World Lost The Battle Against The Monsters Through Lee’s notes and news sections, watchers were given pieces of the tumult. That resulted when these beasts showed up and assaulted. This left at any rate 100, 000 individuals dead. The beasts essentially now accountable for Earth. Be that as it may, presently Evelyn, Marcus. Reagan knows the unmistakable advantage of decimating these beasts. This information could give Earth a battling chance against the beasts. We may see this happen in A Quiet Place: Section 2. The Abbott family could be on an excursion to attempt to advise more individuals. On the best way to battle these animals. A Quiet Place: Part 2 is definitely one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2020. So we’re excited to see how it all plays out. Especially with the possibility of the story continuing beyond this movie. Re watch A Quiet Place on Amazon Prime Video. And catch A Quiet Place: Part 2 in theaters on March 20, 2020. Emily Blunt and child actors Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe will be reprising their role as the family at the center of the A Quiet Place story. Some context to the excerpt; I think it's needed from time to time to show that Emperor wasn't unfallible and omniscient and that Magnus' Folly was the greatest wound in His plan; He doesn't know what will comes next and what to do, after He was forced to abandon Imperial Webway and His nine in every ten of his Custodes are dead. This was basically His weakest moment. The Emperor turned to him, His eyes focusing on the Custodian for the first time. ‘The war is over, Diocletian. Win or lose, Horus has damned us all. Mankind will share in his ignorance until the last man or woman draws the species’ last breath. The warp will forever be a cancer in the heart of all humans. The Imperium may last a hundred years, or a thousand, or ten thousand. But it will fall, Diocletian. It will fall. The shining path is lost to us. Now we rage against the dying of the light. ’ ‘It cannot be this way. ’ Diocletian stepped forwards, teeth clenched. ‘It cannot. ’ The Emperor tilted His head. ‘No? What then do you intend to do, Custodian? How will you – with your spear and your fury and your loyalty – pull fate itself from its repeating path? ’ ‘We will kill Horus. ’ Diocletian stared at his defeated monarch, illuminated in emberish light of the lumoglobe in his hand. ‘And after the war, we can begin anew. We can purge the webway. The Unifiers can rebuild all that was lost, even if it takes centuries. We will strike Horus down and–’ ‘I will face the Sixteenth, ’ the Emperor interrupted, distracted once more by the machine graveyard. ‘But there will come another to take his place. I see that now. It is the way of things. The enemy will never abate. Another will come, one who will doubtless learn from Horus’ errors of faith and judgement. ’ ‘Who, my king? ’ The Emperor shook His head. ‘There is no way to know. And for now it is meaningless. But remember it well – we are not the only ones learning from this conflict. Our enemies grow wiser, as well. ’ Diocletian refused to concede. ‘You are the Emperor of Mankind. We will conquer any who come against us. After the war, we will rebuild under your guidance. ' The Emperor stared at him. He spoke a question that wasn’t a question, one that brooked no answer. ‘And what if I am gone, Diocletian. ’ The Custodian had no answer. Thunder pealed above them, shaking the cavern and jarring loose a rattling hail of falling pebble-dust. ‘My king, what now? What comes next? ’ The Emperor turned away, walking into the darkness of the cavern while the storm hammered the dead city so far above. He spoke three words that no Custodian had ever heard Him speak before. ‘I don’t know. ’.

The emperors used a variety of different titles throughout history. Often when a given Roman is described as becoming "emperor" in English, it reflects his taking of the title Augustus or Caesar. Another title often used was imperator, originally a military honorific. Early Emperors also used the title Princeps Civitatis ('first citizen'). Emperors frequently amassed republican titles, notably princeps senatus, consul and pontifex maximus. The legitimacy of an emperor's rule depended on his control of the army and recognition by the Senate; an emperor would normally be proclaimed by his troops, or invested with imperial titles by the Senate, or both. The first emperors reigned alone; later emperors would sometimes rule with co-emperors and divide administration of the empire between them. The Romans considered the office of emperor to be distinct from that of a king. The first emperor, Augustus, resolutely refused recognition as a monarch. [1] Although Augustus could claim that his power was authentically republican, his successors, Tiberius and Nero, could not convincingly make the same claim. [2] Nonetheless, for the first three hundred years of Roman emperors, from Augustus until Diocletian, efforts were made to portray the emperors as leaders of a republic. From Diocletian, whose tetrarchic reforms also divided the position into one emperor in the West and one in the East, until the end of the Empire, emperors ruled in an openly monarchic style [3] and did not preserve the nominal principle of a republic, but the contrast with "kings" was maintained: although the imperial succession was generally hereditary, it was only hereditary if there was a suitable candidate acceptable to the army and the bureaucracy, [4] so the principle of automatic inheritance was not adopted. Elements of the republican institutional framework (senate, consuls, and magistrates) were preserved even after the end of the Western Empire. The peaceful reign of Constantine the Great, the first to openly convert to Christianity and allowing freedom of religion, witnessed the replacement of the Caput Mundi from Rome to Constantinople. The Western Roman Empire collapsed in the late 5th century after multiple invasions of imperial territory by Germanic barbarian tribes. Romulus Augustulus is often considered to be the last emperor of the West after his forced abdication in 476, although Julius Nepos maintained a claim recognized by the Eastern Empire to the title until his death in 480. Following Nepos' death, the Eastern Emperor Zeno abolished the division of the position and proclaimed himself as the sole Emperor of a reunited Roman Empire. Emperor Heraclius made diplomatic relations with the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad, but lost many territories after successful Islamic conquests. The Eastern imperial lineage continued to rule from Constantinople ("New Rome"); they continued to style themselves as Emperor of the Romans (later βασιλεύς Ῥωμαίων in Greek), but are often referred to in modern scholarship as Byzantine emperors. Constantine XI Palaiologos was the last Roman emperor in Constantinople, dying in the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire 's Mehmed II in 1453. The Muslim rulers then claimed the title of Caesar of Rome. The "Byzantine" emperors from Heraclius in 629 and onwards adopted the title of basileus ( βασιλεύς), which had originally meant king in Greek but became a title reserved solely for the Roman emperor and the ruler of the Sasanian Empire. Other kings were then referred to as rēgas. [5] In addition to their pontifical office, some emperors were given divine status after death. With the eventual hegemony of Christianity, the emperor came to be seen as God's chosen ruler, as well as a special protector and leader of the Christian Church on Earth, although in practice an emperor's authority on Church matters was subject to challenge. Due to the cultural rupture of the Turkish conquest, most western historians treat Constantine XI as the last meaningful claimant to the title Roman Emperor. From 1453, one of the titles used by the Ottoman Sultans was "Caesar of Rome" (Turkish: Kayser-i Rum) [6], part of their titles until the Ottoman Empire ended in 1922. A Byzantine group of claimant Roman emperors existed in the Empire of Trebizond until its conquest by the Ottomans in 1461, though they had used a modified title since 1282. Eastern emperors in Constantinople had been recognized and accepted as Roman emperors both in the East, which they ruled, and by the Papacy and Germanic kingdoms of the West until the deposition of Constantine VI and accession of Irene of Athens as Empress regnant in 797. Objecting to a woman ruling the Roman Empire in her own right and issues with the eastern clergy, the Papacy would then create a rival lineage of Roman emperors in western Europe, the Holy Roman Emperors, which ruled the Holy Roman Empire for most of the period between 800 and 1806. These Emperors were never recognized as Roman emperors by the court in Constantinople and their coronations resulted in the medieval problem of two emperors. Background and beginning [ edit] Statue of Augustus, c. 30 BC–20 BC; this statue is located in the Louvre Modern historians conventionally regard Augustus as the first Emperor whereas Julius Caesar is considered the last dictator of the Roman Republic, a view having its origins in the Roman writers Plutarch, Tacitus and Cassius Dio. [7] However, the majority of Roman writers, including Josephus, Pliny the Younger, Suetonius and Appian, as well as most of the ordinary people of the Empire, thought of Julius Caesar as the first Emperor. [8] At the end of the Roman Republic no new, and certainly no single, title indicated the individual who held supreme power. Insofar as emperor could be seen as the English translation of imperator, then Julius Caesar had been an emperor, like several Roman generals before him. Instead, by the end of the civil wars in which Julius Caesar had led his armies, it became clear that there was certainly no consensus to return to the old-style monarchy, but that the period when several officials, bestowed with equal power by the senate, would fight one another had come to an end. Julius Caesar, and then Augustus after him, accumulated offices and titles of the highest importance in the Republic, making the power attached to those offices permanent, and preventing anyone with similar aspirations from accumulating or maintaining power for themselves. However, Julius Caesar, unlike those after him, did so without the Senate's vote and approval. [ citation needed] Julius Caesar held the Republican offices of consul four times and dictator five times, was appointed dictator in perpetuity ( dictator perpetuo) in 45 BC and had been "pontifex maximus" for a long period. He gained these positions by senatorial consent and just prior to his assassination, was the most powerful man in the Roman world. In his will, Caesar appointed his adopted son Octavian as his heir. On Caesar's death, Octavian inherited his adoptive father's property and lineage, the loyalty of most of his allies and – again through a formal process of senatorial consent – an increasing number of the titles and offices that had accrued to Caesar. A decade after Caesar's death, Octavian's victory over his erstwhile ally Mark Antony at Actium put an end to any effective opposition and confirmed Octavian's supremacy. In 27 BC, Octavian appeared before the Senate and offered to retire from active politics and government; the Senate not only requested he remain, but increased his powers and made them lifelong, awarding him the title of Augustus (the elevated or divine one, somewhat less than a god but approaching divinity). Augustus stayed in office until his death; the sheer breadth of his superior powers as princeps and permanent imperator of Rome's armies guaranteed the peaceful continuation of what nominally remained a republic. His "restoration" of powers to the Senate and the people of Rome was a demonstration of his auctoritas and pious respect for tradition. Some later historians such as Tacitus would say that even at Augustus' death, the true restoration of the Republic might have been possible. Instead, Augustus actively prepared his adopted son Tiberius to be his successor and pleaded his case to the Senate for inheritance on merit. The Senate disputed the issue but eventually confirmed Tiberius as princeps. Once in power, Tiberius took considerable pains to observe the forms and day-to-day substance of republican government. Romans of the Imperial era used several titles to denote their emperors, and all were associated with the pre-Imperial, Republican era. The legal authority of the emperor derived from an extraordinary concentration of individual powers and offices that were extant in the Republic rather than from a new political office; emperors were regularly elected to the offices of consul and censor. [9] Among their permanent privileges were the traditional Republican title of princeps senatus (leader of the Senate) and the religious office of pontifex maximus (chief priest of the College of Pontiffs). Every emperor held the latter office and title until Gratian surrendered it in AD 382 to Pope Siricius; it eventually became an auxiliary honor of the Bishop of Rome. These titles and offices conferred great personal prestige ( dignitas) but the basis of an emperor's powers derived from his auctoritas: this assumed his greater powers of command ( imperium maius) and tribunician power ( tribunicia potestas) as personal qualities, separate from his public office. As a result, he formally outranked provincial governors and ordinary magistrates. He had the right to enact or revoke sentences of capital punishment, was owed the obedience of private citizens ( privati) and by the terms of the ius auxiliandi could save any plebeian from any patrician magistrate's decision. He could veto any act or proposal of any magistrate, including the tribunes of the people ( ius intercedendi or ius intercessionis). His person was held to be sacrosanct. Roman magistrates on official business were expected to wear the form of toga associated with their office; different togas were worn by different ranks; senior magistrates had the right to togas bordered with purple. A triumphal imperator of the Republic had the right to wear the toga picta (of solid purple, richly embroidered) for the duration of the triumphal rite. During the Late Republic, the most powerful had this right extended. Pompey and Caesar are both thought to have worn the triumphal toga and other triumphal dress at public functions. Later emperors were distinguished by wearing togae purpurae, purple togas; hence the phrase "to don the purple" for the assumption of imperial dignity. The titles customarily associated with the imperial dignity are imperator ("commander"), which emphasizes the emperor's military supremacy and is the source of the English word emperor; Caesar, which was originally a name but came to be used for the designated heir (as Nobilissimus Caesar, "Most Noble Caesar") and was retained upon accession. The ruling emperor's title was the descriptive Augustus ("majestic" or "venerable", which had tinges of the divine), which was adopted upon accession. In Greek, these three titles were rendered as autokratōr (" Αὐτοκράτωρ "), kaisar (" Καίσαρ "), and augoustos (" Αὔγουστος ") or sebastos (" Σεβαστός ") respectively. In Diocletian 's Tetrarchy, the traditional seniorities were maintained: "Augustus" was reserved for the two senior emperors and "Caesar" for the two junior emperors – each delegated a share of power and responsibility but each an emperor-in-waiting, should anything befall his senior. As princeps senatus (lit., "first man of the senate"), the emperor could receive foreign embassies to Rome; some emperors (such as Tiberius) are known to have delegated this task to the Senate. In modern terms these early emperors would tend to be identified as chiefs of state. The office of princeps senatus, however, was not a magistracy and did not entail imperium. At some points in the Empire's history, the emperor's power was nominal; powerful praetorian prefects, masters of the soldiers and on a few occasions, other members of the Imperial household including Imperial mothers and grandmothers were the true source of power. Imperator [ edit] The title imperator dates back to the Roman Republic, when a victorious commander could be hailed as imperator in the field by his troops. The Senate could then award or withhold the extraordinary honour of a triumph; the triumphal commander retained the title until the end of his magistracy. [10] In Roman tradition, the first triumph was that of Romulus, but the first attested recipient of the title imperator in a triumphal context is Aemilius Paulus in 189 BC. [10] It was a title held with great pride: Pompey was hailed imperator more than once, as was Sulla, but it was Julius Caesar who first used it permanently – according to Dio, this was a singular and excessive form of flattery granted by the Senate, passed to Caesar's adopted heir along with his name and virtually synonymous with it. [11] In 38 BC Agrippa refused a triumph for his victories under Octavian 's command, and this precedent established the rule that the princeps should assume both the salutation and title of imperator. It seems that from then on Octavian (later the first emperor Augustus) used imperator as a first name ( praenomen): Imperator Caesar not Caesar imperator. From this the title came to denote the supreme power and was commonly used in that sense. Otho was the first to imitate Augustus, but only with Vespasian did imperator (emperor) become the official title by which the ruler of the Roman Empire was known. Princeps [ edit] The word princeps (plural principes), meaning "first", was a republican term used to denote the leading citizen(s) of the state. It was a purely honorific title with no attached duties or powers. It was the title most preferred by Caesar Augustus as its use implies only primacy, as opposed to another of his titles, imperator, which implies dominance. Princeps, because of its republican connotation, was most commonly used to refer to the emperor in Latin (although the emperor's actual constitutional position was essentially "pontifex maximus with tribunician power and imperium superseding all others") as it was in keeping with the façade of the restored Republic; the Greek word basileus ("king") was modified to be synonymous with emperor (and primarily came into favour after the reign of Heraclius) as the Greeks had no republican sensibility and openly viewed the emperor as a monarch. In the era of Diocletian and beyond, princeps fell into disuse and was replaced with dominus ("lord"); [12] later emperors used the formula Imperator Caesar NN. Pius Felix (Invictus) Augustus: NN representing the individual's personal name; Pius Felix meaning "Pious and Blest"; and Invictus meaning "undefeated". The use of princeps and dominus broadly symbolise the differences in the empire's government, giving rise to the era designations " Principate " and " Dominate ". Evolution in Late Antiquity [ edit] In 293, following the Crisis of the Third Century which had severely damaged Imperial administration, Emperor Diocletian enacted sweeping reforms that washed away many of the vestiges and façades of republicanism which had characterized the Augustan order in favor of a more frank autocracy. As a result, historians distinguish the Augustan period as the principate and the period from Diocletian to the 7th-century reforms of Emperor Heraclius as the dominate (from the Latin for "lord". ) Reaching back to the oldest traditions of job-sharing in the republic, however, Diocletian established at the top of this new structure the Tetrarchy ("rule of four") in an attempt to provide for smoother succession and greater continuity of government. Under the Tetrarchy, Diocletian set in place a system of co-emperors, styled "Augustus", and junior emperors, styled "Caesar". When a co-emperor retired (as Diocletian and his co-emperor Maximian did in 305) or died, a junior "Caesar" would succeed him and the co-emperors would appoint new Caesars as needed. The four members of the Imperial college (as historians call the arrangement) shared military and administrative challenges by each being assigned specific geographic areas of the empire. From this innovation, often but not consistently repeated over the next 187 years, comes the notion of an east-west partition of the empire that became popular with historians long after the practice had stopped. The two halves of empire, while often run as de facto separate entities day-to-day, were always considered and seen, legally and politically, as separate administrative divisions of a single, insoluble imperium by the Romans of the time. The final period of co-emperorship began in 395, when Emperor Theodosius I 's sons Arcadius and Honorius succeeded as co-emperors. Eighty-five years later, following Germanic migrations which had reduced the empire's effective control across Brittania, Gaul and Hispania and a series of military coup d'état which drove Emperor Nepos out of Italy, the idea of dividing the position of emperor was formally abolished by Emperor Zeno (480). The Roman Empire survived in the east until 1453, but the marginalization of the former heartland of Italy to the empire [ clarification needed] had a profound cultural impact on the empire and the position of emperor. In 620, the official language was changed from Latin to Greek. The Greek-speaking inhabitants were Romaioi (Ῥωμαῖοι), and were still considered Romans by themselves and the populations of Eastern Europe, the Near East, India, and China. But many in Western Europe began to refer to the political entity as the "Greek Empire". The evolution of the church in the no-longer imperial city of Rome and the church in the now supreme Constantinople began to follow divergent paths, culminating in the schism between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox faiths. The position of emperor was increasingly influenced by Near Eastern concepts of kingship. Starting with Emperor Heraclius, Roman emperors styled themselves "King of Kings" (from the imperial Persian Shahanshah) from 627 and "Basileus" (from the title used by Alexander the Great) from 629. The later period of the empire is today called the Byzantine Empire as a matter of scholarly convention. [ citation needed] Titles and positions [ edit] Although these are the most common offices, titles, and positions, not all Roman emperors used them, nor were all of them used at the same time in history. The consular and censorial offices especially were not an integral part of the Imperial dignity, and were usually held by persons other than the reigning emperor. Augustus: (also " Αὔγουστος " or " Σεβαστός "), "Majestic" or "Venerable"; an honorific cognomen exclusive to the emperor Autokrator: ( Αὐτοκράτωρ, Autokratōr), (lit. "Self-ruler"); Greek title equivalent to imperator or commander-in-chief Basileus: ( Βασιλεύς), Greek for king, popularly used in the east to refer to the emperor; a formal title of the Roman emperor beginning with Heraclius Caesar: (also " Καίσαρ "), "Caesar"; initially the cognomen of Julius Caesar, it was transformed into a title; an honorific name later used to identify an emperor-designate Censor: a Republican office held jointly by two former consuls every five years for the purpose of conducting the lustrum that determined the role of citizens; the censor could audit all other magistrates and all state finances Consul: the highest magistracy of the Roman Republic with a one-year term and one coequal officeholder; the consul was the head of state within Rome. The last emperor to be bestowed the title by the Senate was Constans II, who was also the last emperor to visit Rome. Dominus ("Lord" or "Master"): an honorific title mainly associated with the Dominate Dominus Noster ("Our Lord"): an honorific title; the praenomen of later emperors. [ citation needed] Imperator ("Commander" or "Commander-in-Chief"): a victory title taken on accession to the purple and after a major military victory Imperator Destinatus ("Destined to be Emperor"): heir apparent, used by Septimius Severus for Caracalla Invictus ("Unconquered"), an honorific title. Nobilissimus: ( Nωβελίσσιμος, Nōbelissimos), ("Most Noble"), one of the highest imperial titles held by the emperor Pater Patriae ("Father of the Fatherland"): an honorific title Perpetuus ("Universal"): an honorific title of later emperors Pius Felix ("Pious and Blessed"): an honorific title Pontifex Maximus ("Supreme Pontiff" or "Chief Priest"): in the Republican era, the Pontifex Maximus was the head of the College of Pontiffs, the religious body that oversaw the ancestral public religion of the Romans; Julius Caesar had become Pontifex Maximus before he was elected consul, and the precedent set by his heir Augustus in consolidating supreme authority through this religious office was in general followed by his successors until the empire came under Christian rule Princeps ("First Citizen" or "Leading Citizen"): an honorific title denoting the status of the emperor as first among equals, associated mainly with the Principate Princeps Iuventutis: ("Prince of Youth"), an honorific title awarded to a presumptive emperor-designate Princeps Senatus: ("First Man of the Senate"), a Republican office with a five-year term Sebastos: ( Σεβαστός), ("Venerable"); the Greek rendition of the imperial title Augustus Sebastokrator: ( Σεβαστοκράτωρ, Sebastokratōr), ("Venerable Ruler); a senior court title from the compound words "sebastos" ("venerable", the Greek equivalent of the Latin Augustus) and "kratōr" ("ruler", the same element as is found in "autokratōr", "emperor") Tribunicia Potestas: ("Tribunician Power"); the powers of a tribune of the people, including sacrosanctity and inviolability of his person, and the veto over any decision by any other magistrate, assembly, or the Senate (the emperor could not be a " tribune " because a tribune was a plebeian by definition, therefore the emperor had all the powers of a tribune without actually being one) Powers [ edit] When Augustus established the Princeps, he turned down supreme authority in exchange for a collection of various powers and offices, which in itself was a demonstration of his auctoritas ("authority"). As holding princeps senatus, the emperor declared the opening and closure of each Senate session, declared the Senate's agenda, imposed rules and regulation for the Senate to follow, and met with foreign ambassadors in the name of the Senate. Being pontifex maximus made the emperor the chief administrator of religious affairs, granting him the power to conduct all religious ceremonies, consecrate temples, control the Roman calendar (adding or removing days as needed), appoint the vestal virgins and some flamens, lead the Collegium Pontificum, and summarize the dogma of the Roman religion. While these powers granted the emperor a great deal of personal pride and influence, they did not include legal authority. In 23 BC, Augustus gave the emperorship its legal power. The first was Tribunicia Potestas, or the powers of the tribune of the plebs without actually holding the office (which would have been impossible, since a tribune was by definition a plebeian, whereas Augustus, although born into a plebeian family, had become a patrician when he was adopted into the gens Julia). This endowed the emperor with inviolability (sacrosanctity) of his person, and the ability to pardon any civilian for any act, criminal or otherwise. By holding the powers of the tribune, the emperor could prosecute anyone who interfered with the performance of his duties. The emperor's tribuneship granted him the right to convene the Senate at his will and lay proposals before it, as well as the ability to veto any act or proposal by any magistrate, including the actual tribune of the plebeians. Also, as holder of the tribune's power, the emperor would convoke the Council of the People, lay legislation before it, and served as the council's president. But his tribuneship only granted him power within Rome itself. He would need another power to veto the act of governors and that of the consuls while in the provinces. To solve this problem, Augustus managed to have the emperor be given the right to hold two types of imperium. The first being consular imperium while he was in Rome, and imperium maius outside of Rome. While inside the walls of Rome, the reigning consuls and the emperor held equal authority, each being able to veto each other's proposals and acts, with the emperor holding all of the consul's powers. But outside of Rome, the emperor outranked the consuls and could veto them without the same effects on himself. Imperium Maius also granted the emperor authority over all the provincial governors, making him the ultimate authority in provincial matters and gave him the supreme command of all of Rome's legions. With Imperium Maius, the emperor was also granted the power to appoint governors of imperial provinces without the interference of the Senate. Also, Imperium Maius granted the emperor the right to veto the governors of the provinces and even the reigning consul while in the provinces. Lineages and epochs [ edit] Principate [ edit] The nature of the imperial office and the Principate was established under Julius Caesar 's heir and posthumously adopted son, Caesar Augustus, and his own heirs, the descendants of his wife Livia from her first marriage to a scion of the distinguished Claudian clan. This Julio-Claudian dynasty came to an end when the Emperor Nero – a great-great-grandson of Augustus through his daughter and of Livia through her son – was deposed in 68. Nero was followed by a succession of usurpers throughout 69, commonly called the " Year of the Four Emperors ". The last of these, Vespasian, established his own Flavian dynasty. Nerva, who replaced the last Flavian emperor, Vespasian's son Domitian, in 96, was elderly and childless, and chose therefore to adopt an heir, Trajan, from outside his family. When Trajan acceded to the purple he chose to follow his predecessor's example, adopting Hadrian as his own heir, and the practice then became the customary manner of imperial succession for the next century, producing the " Five Good Emperors " and the Empire's period of greatest stability. The last of the Good Emperors, Marcus Aurelius, chose his natural son Commodus as his successor rather than adopting an heir. Commodus's misrule led to his murder on 31 December 192, following which a brief period of instability quickly gave way to Septimius Severus, who established the Severan dynasty which, except for an interruption in 217–218 when Macrinus was emperor, held the purple until 235. Crisis of the Third Century [ edit] The accession of Maximinus Thrax marks both the close and the opening of an era. It was one of the last attempts by the increasingly impotent Roman Senate to influence the succession. Yet it was the second time that a man had achieved the purple while owing his advancement purely to his military career; both Vespasian and Septimius Severus had come from noble or middle-class families, while Thrax was born a commoner. He never visited the city of Rome during his reign, which marks the beginning of a series of " barracks emperors " who came from the army. Between 235 and 285 over a dozen emperors achieved the purple, but only Valerian and Carus managed to secure their own sons' succession to the throne; both dynasties died out within two generations. Dominate [ edit] The accession on 20 November 284, of Diocletian, the lower-class, Greek-speaking Dalmatian commander of Carus's and Numerian's household cavalry ( protectores domestici), marked major innovations in Rome's government and constitutional theory. Diocletian, a traditionalist and religious conservative, attempted to secure efficient, stable government and a peaceful succession with the establishment of the Tetrarchy. The empire was divided into East and West, each ruled by an Augustus assisted by a Caesar as emperor-in-waiting. These divisions were further subdivided into new or reformed provinces, administered by a complex, hierarchic bureaucracy of unprecedented size and scope. Diocletian's own court was based at Nicomedia. His co-Augustus, Maximian, was based at Mediolanum (modern Milan). Their courts were peripatetic, and Imperial progressions through the provinces made much use of the impressive, theatrical adventus, or "Imperial arrival" ceremony, which employed an elaborate choreography of etiquette to emphasise the emperor's elevation above other mortals. Hyperinflation of imperial honours and titles served to distinguish the Augusti from their Caesares, and Diocletian, as senior Augustus, from his colleague Maximian. The senior Augustus in particular was made a separate and unique being, accessible only through those closest to him. The overall unity of the Empire still required the highest investiture of power and status in one man. [13] The Tetrarchy ultimately degenerated into civil war, but the eventual victor, Constantine the Great, restored Diocletian's division of Empire into East and West. He kept the East for himself and founded his city of Constantinople as its new capital. Constantine's own dynasty was also soon swallowed up in civil war and court intrigue until it was replaced, briefly, by Julian the Apostate 's general Jovian and then, more permanently, by Valentinian I and the dynasty he founded in 364. Though a soldier from a low middle-class background, Valentinian was made emperor by a conclave of senior generals and civil officials. Late empire [ edit] Theodosius I acceded to the purple in the East in 379 and in the West in 394. He outlawed paganism and made Christianity the Empire's official religion. He was the last emperor to rule over a united Roman Empire; the distribution of the East to his son Arcadius and the West to his son Honorius after his death in 395 represented a permanent division. In the West, the office of emperor soon degenerated into being little more than a puppet of a succession of Germanic tribal kings, until finally the Heruli Odoacer simply overthrew the child-emperor Romulus Augustulus in 476, shipped the imperial regalia to the Emperor Zeno in Constantinople and became King of Italy. Though during his own lifetime Odoacer maintained the legal fiction that he was actually ruling Italy as the viceroy of Zeno, historians mark 476 as the traditional date of the fall of the Roman Empire in the West. Large parts of Italy ( Sicily, the south part of the peninsula, Ravenna, Venice etc. ), however, remained under actual imperial rule from Constantinople for centuries, with imperial control slipping or becoming nominal only as late as the 11th century. In the East, the Empire continued until the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. Although known as the Byzantine Empire by contemporary historians, the Empire was simply known as the Roman Empire to its citizens and neighboring countries. Post-classical assertions to the title [ edit] Survival of the Roman Empire in the East [ edit] Imaginary portrait of Constantine XI, the last Roman emperor of the Eastern Roman empire (until 1453). The line of Roman emperors in the Eastern Roman Empire continued unbroken at Constantinople until the capture of Constantinople in 1204 by the Fourth Crusade. In the wake of this action, four lines of Emperors emerged, each claiming to be the legal successor: the Empire of Thessalonica, evolving from the Despotate of Epirus, which was reduced to impotence when its founder Theodore Komnenos Doukas was defeated, captured and blinded by the Bulgarian Emperor Ivan Asen III; [14] the Latin Empire, which came to an end when the Empire of Nicaea recovered Constantinople in 1261; the Empire of Trebizond, whose importance declined over the 13th century, and whose claims were simply ignored; [15] and the Empire of Nicaea, whose claims based on kinship with the previous emperors, control of the Patriarch of Constantinople, and possession of Constantinople through military prowess, prevailed. The successors of the emperors of Nicaea continued until the fall of Constantinople in 1453 under Constantine XI Palaiologos. These emperors eventually normalized the imperial dignity into the modern conception of an emperor, incorporated it into the constitutions of the state, and adopted the aforementioned title Basileus kai autokratōr Rhomaiōn ("Emperor and Autocrat of the Romans"). They had also ceased to use Latin as the language of state after Emperor Heraclius (d. 641 AD). Historians have customarily treated the state of these later Eastern emperors under the name " Byzantine Empire ". It is important to note, however, that the adjective Byzantine, although historically used by Eastern Roman authors in a metonymic sense, was never an official term. Last Roman emperor [ edit] Constantine XI Palaiologos was the last reigning Roman emperor. A member of the Palaiologos dynasty, he ruled the remnant of the Eastern Roman Empire from 1449 until his death in 1453 defending its capital Constantinople. He was born in Mystra [16] as the eighth of ten children of Manuel II Palaiologos and Helena Dragaš, the daughter of the Serbian prince Constantine Dragaš of Kumanovo. He spent most of his childhood in Constantinople under the supervision of his parents. During the absence of his older brother in Italy, Constantine was regent in Constantinople from 1437–40. Before the beginning of the siege, Mehmed the Conqueror made an offer to Constantine XI. [17] In exchange for the surrender of Constantinople, the emperor's life would be spared and he would continue to rule in Mystra. Constantine refused this offer. Instead he led the defense of the city and took an active part in the fighting along the land walls. At the same time, he used his diplomatic skills to maintain the necessary unity between the Genovese, Venetian, and Byzantine troops. As the city fell on May 29, 1453, Constantine is said to have remarked: "The city is fallen but I am alive. " Realizing that the end had come, he reportedly discarded his purple cloak and led his remaining soldiers into a final charge, in which he was killed. With his death, Roman imperial succession came to an end, almost 1500 years after Augustus. After the fall of Constantinople, Thomas Palaiologos, brother of Constantine XI, was elected emperor and tried to organize the remaining forces. His rule came to an end after the fall of the last major Byzantine city, Corinth. He then moved in Italy and continued to be recognized as Eastern emperor by the Christian powers. His son Andreas Palaiologos continued claims on the Byzantine throne until he sold the title to Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, the grandparents of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. New Western lineage [ edit] Charles V was the last emperor of the Holy Roman Empire to receive a papal coronation (until abdication in 1556). The concept of the Roman Empire was renewed in the West with the coronation of the king of the Franks, Charlemagne (Charles the Great), as Roman emperor by the Pope on Christmas Day, 800. This coronation had its roots in the decline of influence of the Pope in the affairs of the Byzantine Empire at the same time the Byzantine Empire declined in influence over politics in the West. The Pope saw no advantage to be derived from working with the Byzantine Empire, but as George Ostrogorsky points out, "an alliance with the famous conqueror of the Lombards, on the other hand... promised much". [18] The immediate response of the Eastern Roman emperor was not welcoming. "At that time it was axiomatic that there could be only one Empire as there could be only one church", writes Ostrogorsky. "The coronation of Charles the Great violated all traditional ideas and struck a hard blow at Byzantine interests, for hitherto Byzantium, the new Rome, had unquestionably been regarded as the sole Empire which had taken over the inheritance of the old Roman imperium. Conscious of its imperial rights, Byzantium could only consider the elevation of Charles the Great to be an act of usurpation. " [19] Nikephoros I chose to ignore Charlemagne's claim to the imperial title, clearly recognizing the implications of this act. According to Ostrogorsky, "he even went so far as to refuse the Patriarch Nicephorus permission to dispatch the customary synodica to the Pope. " [20] Meanwhile, Charlemagne's power steadily increased: he subdued Istria and several Dalmatian cities during the reign of Irene, and his son Pepin brought Venice under Western hegemony, despite a successful counter-attack by the Byzantine fleet. Unable to counter this encroachment on Byzantine territory, Nikephoros' successor Michael I Rangabe capitulated; in return for the restoration of the captured territories, Michael sent Byzantine delegates to Aachen in 812 who recognized Charlemagne as Basileus. [21] Michael did not recognize him as Basileus of the Romans, however, which was a title that he reserved for himself. [22] This line of Roman emperors was actually generally Germanic rather than Roman, but maintained their Roman-ness as a matter of principle. These emperors used a variety of titles (most frequently " Imperator Augustus ") before finally settling on Imperator Romanus Electus ("Elected Roman Emperor"). Historians customarily assign them the title "Holy Roman Emperor", which has a basis in actual historical usage, and treat their " Holy Roman Empire " as a separate institution. To Latin Catholics of the time, the Pope was the temporal authority as well as spiritual authority, and as Bishop of Rome he was recognized as having the power to anoint or crown a new Roman emperor. The last man to be crowned by the pope (although in Bologna, not Rome) was Charles V. All his successors bore only a title of "Elected Roman Emperor". This line of Emperors lasted until 1806 when Francis II dissolved the Empire during the Napoleonic Wars. Despite the existence of later potentates styling themselves "emperor", such as the Napoleons, the Habsburg Emperors of Austria, and the Hohenzollern heads of the German Reich, this marked the end of the Western Empire. Although there is a living heir, Karl von Habsburg, to the Habsburg dynasty, as well as a Pope and pretenders to the positions of the electors, and although all the medieval coronation regalia are still preserved in Austria, the legal abolition of all aristocratic prerogatives of the former electors and the imposition of republican constitutions in Germany and Austria render quite remote any potential for a revival of the Holy Roman Empire. Pretty sure it hit front page. So probably a repost. level 2 I thought that sub was only for made-up stuff. level 2 Comment deleted by user 17 days ago ( More than 1 child) level 1 Did they not even bother giving him a mask like they did in ROTS and ROTJ? It looks like they just powdered his face a little and gave him some black lipstick and called it a day. He doesn't look like Palpatine is supposed to, imo. level 2 Sheev is a goth girl now. level 2 Palpatine's red shirt also stood out in a bad way. He had like a blouse on or something. It was weird. level 2 Thinking of him as an animated puppet is actually a decent plot idea, if it were revealed that it was someone or something else pulling the strings Wizard of Oz style. I wouldn't mind undead Palps if perhaps some kind of rogue AI learned to replicate his mannerisms and even animate the corpse in a weird Frankenstein meets GLaDOS kind of way. It would be a unique enough idea / villain to truly subvert expectations and would have the ultimate battle being more tech vs. mythical instead of Light vs. Dark, but meh. They'll still figure out a way to make an Episode X that retcons even more of the lore. level 2 Yeah Palpatine is not a human, he's a powerful alien, when his face changes in the 3rd movie it's because his fake one is supposed to melt and he then decides to keep going like that. So his face is another thing that doesn't make sense in the 9th. Well that, and the fact his body got disassembled to molecular level in the double death star explosion, yet somehow he's only partially rotten missing a phalange here and there level 2 I thought the same thing! He looks way better than he did in rots and rotj, just without the cute sith eyes level 2 Is it really that different from anything else with abrams' or one of his frequent collaborators fingerprints on it? At this point I've given up the possibility that I will ever enjoy something where abrams', kurtzman, lindelof, or orci has a writing credit.

Je te kiffe Adèle ♥️merci dêtre toi. Ritratto della giovane in fiamme. LOL that opening 😂 agree, if I had to describe the film, I'd say it's breathtaking and exquisite. I love that you guys mention feeling the love- that's exactly what Celine Sciamma was after. She's brilliant and I love her and this film. Ritratto della giovane in flammekueche. I've been so hyped to see this for months.

Press alt + / to open this menu. Film 19. 10. 2019. Ovom scenom nas Céline Sciamma uvodi u svoj četvrti cjelovečernji film Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Burni životi aristokracije Portrait of a Lady on Fire prati Marianne ( Noémie Merlant), odvažnu slikaricu, koja na sebe preuzima posao izrade vjenčanog portreta dame Héloïse ( Adèle Haenel). Intimna sudbina žena Postavljajući Marianne i Héloïse u odnos potajnog promatrača/potajno promatranog, Sciamma gradi emotivni i psihološki naboj između protagonistica. Kada je u pitanju vizualna inspiracija, Claude Monet i njegovi radovi na obali Bretanje (Woman with a Parsol, The Cliff Walk at Pourville, The Cliff, The Beach And The Falaise D) bivaju translatirani u filmske kadrove, kao i nekolicina radova Mary Cassatt (Five O’Clock Tea, The Lodge, In the Lodge). Portrait of a Lady on Fire je nesvakidašnja, osnažujuća ljubavna drama o umjetnosti i slobodi, ispunjena dubokim emocijama i intrigantnim referencama na radove slikarica i slikara impresionizma. Film je do sada osvojio nagradu za najbolji scenarij i nagradu Queer Palm na ovogodišnjem Cannes Film Festivalu. (Visited 405 times, 51 visits today) Što misliš o ovom filmu? Marianne, slikarka treba da naslika portret za venčanje Héloïse, mlade žene koja tek što je napustila manastir. Héloïse je nesigurna buduća mlada i Marianne treba da je naslika bez njenog znanja. Ona je posmatra svakog dana, kako bi je krišom naslikala. Saturday, 7 December 9PM Main Hall Belgrade Youth Center Ticket price: 300 RSD Feature film Director: Céline Sciamma Cast: Noémie Merlant, Adèle Haenel, Luàna Bajrami France, 2019 Best Screenplay Cannes Film Festival, Queer Palm Cannes Film Festival France, 1770. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Héloïse is a reluctant bride to be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day, to paint her secretly. Céline Sciamma, a greedy film-lover, studied scriptwriting with an eagerness to meet people and talk about her generation. During her studies she built long-lasting friendships with Rebecca Zlotowski and Marie Amachoukeli (director of Party Girl). She shot her first feature film (Water Lilies) without any prior experience of making a first short film. After this film everything went very fast. Céline Sciamma is probably one of the best French film directors to have appeared in recent years. Although she looks like a girl just out of high school she is very mature and organized. For her fist three films she dived into youth (Water Lilies, Tomboy, Girlhood), always with a great deal of freshness and lightness. In her first film, Water Lilies, she examined the moment when desire materializes in a young girl’s mind. Tomboy, her second film is a splendid chronicle, free of any counterfeiting, of a young girl who pretends she is a boy. Her last film, Girlhood, which was presented at the opening of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs in Cannes, follows the path that brings together a group of “bad girls”.

Ritratto della giovane in. Ritratto della giovane in flammes. Flawless. 10:18 the domino effect on bump into each other for walking too fast😂😂. Ritratto della giovane in flamme. I was in the same place with Marianne 3 years ago! We left with their portraits in our hearts! I just love the movie! I can relate! Teary eyed here! Reminds me of someone I so dearly loved! Thank you for this video! 💖. Bellissimo. Where can i Watch this. The chemistry between the two women is unbeliavable, i loved it ❤.

That music is just amazing. Haven't seen the movie yet. But I have that trailer on repeat as we speak. Ritratto della giovane in flamme rouge. Ritratto della giovane in fiamme bologna. Beautiful scenery, artistic photography but otherwise not interesting at all, sorry it was boring most of the rime. Some very cliche images like the baby in the scene the abortion or the mirror placed on a certain spot. in another scene. Embarrassing.

I watched Portrait of a lady on fire and it was absolutely stunning. Such a beautiful and heartbreaking movie.💓💓💓. Another reason to stan: Their performances get more intense to me the more i rewatch them.

February 14, 2020 9:00AM PT A late-’70s TV show that hardly needed another reboot gets a convoluted horror-movie overhaul from the producer of 'Paranormal Activity. ' Somewhere, someone has been desperately hoping that Hollywood would get around to making a movie adaptation of the late-’70s TV show “ Fantasy Island. ” Meanwhile, it would seem that the rest of us — that is, the filmgoing public — are just extras in an elaborate cautionary tale designed to teach that person a lesson. The point being: Be careful what you wish for; such corny old TV series are better suited for reruns than for reboots. As suave yet sinister host Mr. Roarke warns the half-dozen expendable douchebags — er, guests — who’ve traveled to this enchanted retreat to live out their wildest dreams, “Fantasies rarely play out as you would expect. ” This one at least packs the novelty of having been reconfigured into a Blumhouse horror movie (producer Jason Blum previously delivered such low-budget, high-concept hits as “Paranormal Activity, ” “The Purge” and “Get Out”). That means a chance to explore the shadowy corners of a property originally designed to accommodate a parade of flashy guest stars, à la “The Love Boat” before it — although that show doesn’t accommodate a zombie outbreak nearly so easily. In remaking Gene Levitt’s primetime series, “ Blumhouse ’s Fantasy Island ” leans into the natural darkness of its namesake while mistakenly assuming that millennials know or care the slightest thing about it. Will they appreciate Michael Peña’s thickly accented homage to Mexican actor Ricardo Montalban, who played the original Mr. Roarke? Will they miss the character of Tattoo, played by the inimitable Hervé Villechaize? (Frankly, “imitable” would be a more appropriate word to describe Roarke’s diminutive henchman, whose trademark “Ze plane! Ze plane! ” became a popular catchphrase. ) On one hand, Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island” seems unlikely to satisfy anyone who remembers the vintage ABC show or its short-lived 1998 revival, swapping out the weekly pleasure of watching Roarke torment the revolving cast of has-beens (TV stars like Peter Graves and Maureen McCormick found intermittent work after their hit series were canceled) for a more convoluted plot in which the island engineers a series of deadly scenarios for a bunch of shallow nobodies (over-actors like Lucy Hale, Maggie Q and Portia Doubleday). Director and co-writer Jeff Wadlow (who earned a shot at this more extravagant project after delivering Blumhouse’s “Truth or Dare” for a mere $3. 5 million) must have impressed someone with his take on the material, with its “Cabin in the Woods”-like ambitions. The finished film plays at times like an out-of-control pitch meeting, lurching from one ostensibly clever idea to the next without taking the trouble to connect the dots, or even to remain consistent with the two simple rules it sets out for itself. First, only one fantasy per person (no do-overs, unless the do-over itself happens to be your fantasy). Second, each guest must see his or her fantasy through to its natural conclusion — and they inevitably “turn twisted” after a time. That last bit of analysis comes from a wild-eyed, machete-wielding loon played by Michael Rooker, who might be trustworthy — or he might be another manifestation of the supernatural force that governs Fantasy Island. His character watches ominously from the bush as “ze plane” arrives bearing five Instagram-ready hot bodies, who look like they made a wrong turn en route to Fyre Festival. As Melanie, Hale harrumphs that there’s no signal, while high-fiving step-“bros” JD (Ryan Hansen) and Brax (Jimmy O. Yang) reek of Axe body wash. After flirting with Gwen ( Maggie Q) on the dismount, ex-cop Patrick (Austin Stowell) heads to his room and instantly removes his shirt. Cue gratuitous camera pan down to his pecs. Gwen also changes into her skivvies, getting something of a shock when she spots a creepy figure in her bathroom mirror. Whose fantasy is this, again? Oh right, yours. And if such titillation does it for you, then the ensuing assortment of cheap thrills just might suffice. For a horror remake of “Fantasy Island, ” however, the PG-13 rating doesn’t allow for much in the way of actual scares. It may be more practical to think of the movie as a hybrid of various genres, as each character’s fantasy takes the shape of a different kind of film. JD dreams of “having it all, ” so Roarke leads him and Brax to a crazy backyard bash cribbed from pothead house-party movies like “Old School” and “This Is the End” (minus anything that would have pushed the film into R-rated territory). Gwen regrets turning down a boyfriend’s marriage proposal five years earlier, so Roarke conjures a soft-focus romantic scene straight out of the Nicholas Sparks playbook. Patrick always wanted to be a soldier, so he gets to play “Platoon” alongside the hero dad he never knew. The only one who seems to be sticking to the horror genre is Melanie, who longs to get back at the girl who bullied her in high school, Sloane (Doubleday). Roarke instructs her to take the elevator to the basement of the island mansion (whose exterior does a fine job of matching the one seen on the show), where a torture-porn scenario awaits: Sloane sits strapped into a dental chair, while a diabolical surgeon (Ian Roberts) with an autopsy saw is prepared to make her pay. Again, things can only go so far within the confines of a PG-13 rating — which comes as a relief in this particular situation. It takes the characters nearly an hour to understand the idea that they’re getting to experience their fantasies. Maybe that’s because, instead of paying $50, 000 for the privilege the way they did on TV, they are all winners of a contest whose details are never divulged. Given that change, few will be surprised to learn that they’ve been assembled for the amusement (or revenge) of someone else, although the movie doesn’t explain why that person is allowed to violate the first rule of Fantasy Island. No matter. Wadlow has designed the experience like a ride, whisking audiences along quickly enough that they’re not meant to dwell on plot holes. Granted, it’s hard to predict where the plot is headed when the core premises are constantly in flux and one’s ears are ringing with Bear McCreary’s overemphatic score, although by the end, as certain characters are brought back to life and others are turned into “black-eyed zombies, ” audiences will most likely be wishing they’d bought a ticket to another movie. • summary=April 6, 1917. On a battlefield in Northern France, Lance Corporal Tom Blake with the British Army is asked to choose one of his battalion colleagues to join him on an assignment, he choosing his best friend, Lance Corporal Will Schofield. It isn't until Blake chooses Schofield that they learn of the dangerous nature of the mission: to hand deliver a message to Colonel MacKenzie leading another nearby battalion, they having to cross no man's land to what they have been told are now the abandoned German trenches to get to MacKenzie just past the nearby town of Écoust. The message, which must reach its destination by dawn tomorrow, is for MacKenzie to abort his troop's attack then on the supposedly retreating Germans who are in reality lying in wait, the Germans having planned this deception for months. The lives of MacKenzie and his 1,600 men are at risk if the message does not make it through in time, one of those men being Blake's brother, Lt. Joseph Blake. Blake and Schofield's stories as it pertains to them as soldiers in the bigger picture of the war, as soldiers trying to stay alive, as friends, and as human beings who have their own motivations are told for as long as they are able to survive on this mission

Tagalog () [6] Tagalog pronunciation:  [tɐˈɡaːloɡ]) is an Austronesian language spoken as a first language by a quarter of the population of the Philippines and as a second language by the majority. [7] [8] Its standardized form, officially named Filipino, is the national language of the Philippines, and is one of two official languages alongside English. It is related to other Philippine languages, such as the Bikol languages, Ilocano, the Visayan languages, Kapampangan, and Pangasinan, and more distantly to other Austronesian languages, such as the Formosan languages of Taiwan, Malay ( Malaysian and Indonesian), Hawaiian, Māori, and Malagasy. History [ edit] The word Tagalog is derived from the endonym taga-ilog ("river dweller"), composed of tagá- ("native of" or "from") and ilog ("river"). Linguists such as Dr. David Zorc and Dr. Robert Blust speculate that the Tagalogs and other Central Philippine ethno-linguistic groups originated in Northeastern Mindanao or the Eastern Visayas. [9] [10] Possible words of Old Tagalog origin are attested in the Laguna Copperplate Inscription from the tenth century, which is largely written in Old Malay. [11] The first known complete book to be written in Tagalog is the Doctrina Christiana (Christian Doctrine), printed in 1593. The Doctrina was written in Spanish and two transcriptions of Tagalog; one in the ancient, then-current Baybayin script and the other in an early Spanish attempt at a Latin orthography for the language. Vocabulario de la lengua tagala, 1794. Throughout the 333 years of Spanish rule, various grammars and dictionaries were written by Spanish clergymen. In 1610, the Dominican priest Francisco Blancas de San Jose published the “Arte y reglas de la Lengua Tagala” (which was subsequently revised with two editions in 1752 and 1832) in Bataan. In 1613, the Franciscan priest Pedro de San Buenaventura published the first Tagalog dictionary, his "Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala" in Pila, Laguna. The first substantial dictionary of the Tagalog language was written by the Czech Jesuit missionary Pablo Clain in the beginning of the 18th century. Clain spoke Tagalog and used it actively in several of his books. He prepared the dictionary, which he later passed over to Francisco Jansens and José Hernandez. [12] Further compilation of his substantial work was prepared by P. Juan de Noceda and P. Pedro de Sanlucar and published as Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala in Manila in 1754 and then repeatedly [13] reedited, with the last edition being in 2013 in Manila. [14] Among others, Arte de la lengua tagala y manual tagalog para la administración de los Santos Sacramentos (1850) in addition to early studies [15] of the language. The indigenous poet Francisco Baltazar (1788–1862) is regarded as the foremost Tagalog writer, his most notable work being the early 19th-century epic Florante at Laura. [16] Historical changes [ edit] Diariong Tagalog (Tagalog Newspaper), the first bilingual newspaper in the Philippines founded in 1882 written in both Tagalog and Spanish. Tagalog differs from its Central Philippine counterparts with its treatment of the Proto-Philippine schwa vowel *ə. In most Bikol and Visayan languages, this sound merged with /u/ and [o]. In Tagalog, it has merged with /i/. For example, Proto-Philippine *dəkət (adhere, stick) is Tagalog dikít and Visayan & Bikol dukot. Proto-Philippine *r, *j, and *z merged with /d/ but is /l/ between vowels. Proto-Philippine *ŋajan (name) and *hajək (kiss) became Tagalog ngalan and halík. Proto-Philippine *R merged with /ɡ/. *tubiR (water) and *zuRuʔ (blood) became Tagalog tubig and dugô. Official status [ edit] Tagalog was declared the official language by the first revolutionary constitution in the Philippines, the Constitution of Biak-na-Bato in 1897. [17] In 1935, the Philippine constitution designated English and Spanish as official languages, but mandated the development and adoption of a common national language based on one of the existing native languages. [18] After study and deliberation, the National Language Institute, a committee composed of seven members who represented various regions in the Philippines, chose Tagalog as the basis for the evolution and adoption of the national language of the Philippines. [19] [20] President Manuel L. Quezon then, on December 30, 1937, proclaimed the selection of the Tagalog language to be used as the basis for the evolution and adoption of the national language of the Philippines. [19] In 1939, President Quezon renamed the proposed Tagalog-based national language as Wikang Pambansâ (national language). [20] Under the Japanese puppet government during World War II, Tagalog as a national language was strongly promoted; the 1943 Constitution specifying: The government shall take steps toward the development and propagation of Tagalog as the national language. ". In 1959, the language was further renamed as "Pilipino". [20] Along with English, the national language has had official status under the 1973 constitution (as "Pilipino") [21] and the present 1987 constitution (as Filipino). Controversy [ edit] The adoption of Tagalog in 1937 as basis for a national language is not without its own controversies. Instead of specifying Tagalog, the national language was designated as Wikang Pambansâ ("National Language") in 1939. [19] [22] Twenty years later, in 1959, it was renamed by then Secretary of Education, José Romero, as Pilipino to give it a national rather than ethnic label and connotation. The changing of the name did not, however, result in acceptance among non- Tagalogs, especially Cebuanos who had not accepted the selection. [20] The national language issue was revived once more during the 1971 Constitutional Convention. Majority of the delegates were even in favor of scrapping the idea of a "national language" altogether. [23] A compromise solution was worked out—a "universalist" approach to the national language, to be called Filipino rather than Pilipino. The 1973 constitution makes no mention of Tagalog. When a new constitution was drawn up in 1987, it named Filipino as the national language. [20] The constitution specified that as the Filipino language evolves, it shall be further developed and enriched on the basis of existing Philippine and other languages. However, more than two decades after the institution of the "universalist" approach, there seems to be little if any difference between Tagalog and Filipino. Many of the older generation in the Philippines feel that the replacement of English by Tagalog in the popular visual media has had dire economic effects regarding the competitiveness of the Philippines in trade and overseas remittances. [24] Use in education [ edit] This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. ( March 2018) Upon the issuance of Executive Order No. 134, Tagalog was declared as basis of the National Language. On 12 April 1940, Executive No. 263 was issued ordering the teaching of the national language in all public and private schools in the country. [25] Article XIV, Section 7 of the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines specifies, in part: Subject to provisions of law and as the Congress may deem appropriate, the Government shall take steps to initiate and sustain the use of Filipino as a medium of official communication and as language of instruction in the educational system. [26] The regional languages are the auxiliary official languages in the regions and shall serve as auxiliary media of instruction therein. [26] In 2009, the Department of Education promulgated an order institutionalizing a system of mother-tongue based multilingual education ("MLE"), wherein instruction is conducted primarily in a student's mother tongue (one of the various regional Philippine languages) until at least grade three, with additional languages such as Filipino and English being introduced as separate subjects no earlier than grade two. In secondary school, Filipino and English become the primary languages of instruction, with the learner's first language taking on an auxiliary role. [27] After pilot tests in selected schools, the MLE program was implemented nationwide from School Year (SY) 2012-2013. [28] [29] It is the first language of a quarter of the population of the Philippines (particularly in Central and Southern Luzon) and a second language of the majority. [30] Geographic distribution [ edit] A landslide and rockslide-prone area sign at Indang, Cavite. Distribution of Tagalog speakers around the world.    Countries with more than 500, 000 speakers    Countries with 100, 000–500, 000 speakers    Countries where it is spoken by minor communities According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, as of 2014 there were 100 million people living in the Philippines, where the vast majority of whom will have some basic level of understanding of the language. The Tagalog homeland, Katagalugan, covers roughly much of the central to southern parts of the island of Luzon — particularly in Aurora, Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Metro Manila, Nueva Ecija, Quezon, Rizal and Zambales. Tagalog is also spoken natively by inhabitants living on the islands of Marinduque and Mindoro, as well as Palawan to a lesser extent. Significant minorities are found in the other Central Luzon provinces of Pampanga and Tarlac, as well as Ambos Camarines in Bicol Region. At the 2000 Philippines Census, it is spoken by approximately 57. 3 million Filipinos, 96% of the household population who were able to attend school; [31] slightly over 22 million, or 28% of the total Philippine population, [32] speak it as a native language. The following regions and provinces of the Philippines are majority Tagalog-speaking (from north to south): Central Luzon Region Aurora Nueva Ecija Zambales Metro Manila (National Capital Region) Southern Luzon ( Calabarzon and Mimaropa) Cavite Laguna Rizal Quezon Occidental Mindoro Oriental Mindoro Romblon Palawan Bicol Region (While the Bikol languages have traditionally been the majority languages in the following provinces, heavy Tagalog influence and migration has resulted in its significant presence in these provinces and in many communities Tagalog is now the majority language. ) Camarines Norte Camarines Sur Tagalog speakers are also found in other parts of the Philippines and through its standardized form of Filipino, the language serves the national lingua franca of the country. Tagalog also serves as the common language among Overseas Filipinos, though its use overseas is usually limited to communication between Filipino ethnic groups. The largest concentration of Tagalog speakers outside the Philippines is found in the United States, where in 2013, the U. S. Census Bureau reported (based on data collected in 2011) that it was the fourth most-spoken non-English language at home with almost 1. 6 million speakers, behind Spanish, French (including Patois, Cajun, Creole), and Chinese (with figures for Cantonese and Mandarin combined). In urban areas, Tagalog ranked as the third most spoken non-English language, behind Spanish and Chinese varieties but ahead of French. [33] Other countries with significant concentrations of overseas Filipinos and Tagalog speakers include Saudi Arabia, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Malaysia. Classification [ edit] Tagalog is a Central Philippine language within the Austronesian language family. Being Malayo-Polynesian, it is related to other Austronesian languages, such as Malagasy, Javanese, Malay ( Malaysian and Indonesian), Tetum (of Timor), and Yami (of Taiwan). [34] It is closely related to the languages spoken in the Bicol Region and the Visayas islands, such as the Bikol group and the Visayan group, including Waray-Waray, Hiligaynon and Cebuano. [34] Dialects [ edit] Distribution of Tagalog dialects in the Philippines. The color-schemes represent the four dialect zones of the language: Northern, Central, Southern and Marinduque. While the majority of residents in Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur traditionally speak Bikol as their first language, these provinces nonetheless have significant Tagalog minorities. In addition, Tagalog is used as a second language throughout the country. At present, no comprehensive dialectology has been done in the Tagalog-speaking regions, though there have been descriptions in the form of dictionaries and grammars of various Tagalog dialects. Ethnologue lists Manila, Lubang, Marinduque, Bataan (Western Central Luzon), Batangas, Bulacan (Eastern Central Luzon), Tanay-Paete (Rizal-Laguna), and Tayabas (Quezon) as dialects of Tagalog; however, there appear to be four main dialects, of which the aforementioned are a part: Northern (exemplified by the Bulacan dialect), Central (including Manila), Southern (exemplified by Batangas), and Marinduque. Some example of dialectal differences are: Many Tagalog dialects, particularly those in the south, preserve the glottal stop found after consonants and before vowels. This has been lost in Standard Tagalog. For example, standard Tagalog ngayón (now, today), sinigáng (broth stew), gabí (night), matamís (sweet), are pronounced and written ngay-on, sinig-ang, gab-i, and matam-is in other dialects. In Teresian - Morong Tagalog, [ɾ] is usually preferred over [d]. For example, bundók, dagat, dingdíng, and isdâ become bunrók, ragat, ringríng, and isrâ, e. g. "sandók sa dingdíng" becoming "sanrók sa ringríng". In many southern dialects, the progressive aspect infix of -um- verbs is na-. For example, standard Tagalog kumakain (eating) is nákáin in Quezon and Batangas Tagalog. This is the butt of some jokes by other Tagalog speakers, for should a Southern Tagalog ask nákáin ka ba ng patíng? ("Do you eat shark? "), he would be understood as saying "Has a shark eaten you? " by speakers of the Manila Dialect. Some dialects have interjections which are considered a regional trademark. For example, the interjection ala e! usually identifies someone from Batangas as does hane?! in Rizal and Quezon provinces. Perhaps the most divergent Tagalog dialects are those spoken in Marinduque. [35] Linguist Rosa Soberano identifies two dialects, western and eastern, with the former being closer to the Tagalog dialects spoken in the provinces of Batangas and Quezon. One example is the verb conjugation paradigms. While some of the affixes are different, Marinduque also preserves the imperative affixes, also found in Visayan and Bikol languages, that have mostly disappeared from most Tagalog early 20th century; they have since merged with the infinitive. Northern and central dialects form the basis for the national language. Accents [ edit] The Tagalog language also boasts accentations unique to some parts of Tagalog-speaking regions. For example, in some parts of Manila, a strong pronunciation of i exists and vowel-switching of o and u exists so words like "gising" (to wake) is pronounced as "giseng" with a strong 'e' and the word "tagu-taguan" (hide-and-go-seek) is pronounced as "tago-tagoan" with a mild 'o'. Batangas Tagalog boasts the most distinctive accent in Tagalog compared to the more Hispanized northern accents of the language. [ citation needed] The Batangas accent has been featured in film and television and Filipino actor Leo Martinez speaks with this accent. Martinez's accent, however, will quickly be recognized by native Batangueños as representative of the accent in western Batangas which is milder compared to that used in the eastern part of the province. [ citation needed] Bulacan Tagalog has more deep words and accented like Filipino during the Spanish period. Quezon and Aurora's Tagalog has unique accents. Quezon's Tagalog has also has several unique words, and each town has a different tone, like in Sariaya, Atimonan and Gumaca. Cavite accent specifically in the lowland part of the province were a mix of deep Tagalog and Chavacano, a language also spoken in Zamboanga while in upland Cavite like in the municipalities of Alfonso, Cavite, Magallanes, Cavite as well as Tagaytay City uses the accent comparable to the accent used in western Batangas due to its proximity. Laguna also has a different set of accents, notably in the municipality of Alaminos, Laguna and the City of San Pablo, Laguna has the accent comparable to the accent used in eastern Batangas while the accent used in the northern parts of Laguna such as Biñan, Laguna and San Pedro, Laguna uses the accent comparable to Manila Tagalog. Nueva Ecija's accent is like Bulacan's, but with different intonations. Tarlac also has this accent. Code-switching with English [ edit] Taglish and Englog are names given to a mix of English and Tagalog. The amount of English vs. Tagalog varies from the occasional use of English loan words to changing language in mid-sentence. Such code-switching is prevalent throughout the Philippines and in various languages of the Philippines other than Tagalog. Code-mixing also entails the use of foreign words that are "Filipinized" by reforming them using Filipino rules, such as verb conjugations. Users typically use Filipino or English words, whichever comes to mind first or whichever is easier to use. Magshoshopping kami sa mall. Sino ba ang magdadrive sa shopping center? We will go shopping at the mall. Who will drive to the shopping center? City-dwellers are more likely to do this. The practice is common in television, radio, and print media as well. Advertisements from companies like Wells Fargo, Wal-Mart, Albertsons, McDonald's, and Western Union have contained Taglish. Phonology [ edit] Tagalog has 33 phonemes: 19 of them are consonants and 14 are vowels. Syllable structure is relatively simple, being maximally CrVC, where Cr only occurs in borrowed words such as trak "truck" or sombréro "hat". [36] Vowels [ edit] Tagalog has ten simple vowels, five long and five short, and four diphthongs. [36] Before appearing in the area north of the Pasig river, Tagalog had three vowel qualities: /a/, /i/, and /u/. This was later expanded to five with the introduction of words from central and northern Philippines, such as the Kapampangan, Pangasinan and Ilocano languages, as well as Spanish words. Intervocalic /ɡ/ and /k/ tend to become [ɰ], as in Spanish agua, especially in the Manila dialect. /ɾ/ and /d/ were once allophones, and they still vary grammatically, with initial /d/ becoming intervocalic /ɾ/ in many words. [36] A glottal stop that occurs in pausa (before a pause) is omitted when it is in the middle of a phrase, [36] especially in the Metro Manila area. The vowel it follows is then lengthened. However, it is preserved in many other dialects. The /ɾ/ phoneme is an alveolar rhotic that has a free variation between a trill, a flap and an approximant ( [r~ɾ~ɹ]). The /dʒ/ phoneme may become a consonant cluster [dd͡ʒ] in between vowels such as sadyâ [sadˈd͡ʒäʔ]. Glottal stop is not indicated. [36] Glottal stops are most likely to occur when: the word starts with a vowel, like a so (dog) the word includes a dash followed by a vowel, like mag- a ral (study) the word has two vowels next to each other, like pa a no (how) the word starts with a prefix followed by a verb that starts with a vowel, like mag-aayos ([will] fix) Stress and final glottal stop [ edit] Stress is a distinctive feature in Tagalog. Primary stress occurs on either the final or the penultimate syllable of a word. Vowel lengthening accompanies primary or secondary stress except when stress occurs at the end of a word. Tagalog words are often distinguished from one another by the position of the stress and/or the presence of a final glottal stop. In formal or academic settings, stress placement and the glottal stop are indicated by a diacritic ( tuldík) above the final vowel. [37] The penultimate primary stress position ( malumay) is the default stress type and so is left unwritten except in dictionaries. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish in 1521 and the beginning of their colonization in 1565, Tagalog was written in an abugida —or alphasyllabary —called Baybayin. This system of writing gradually gave way to the use and propagation of the Latin alphabet as introduced by the Spanish. As the Spanish began to record and create grammars and dictionaries for the various languages of the Philippine archipelago, they adopted systems of writing closely following the orthographic customs of the Spanish language and were refined over the years. Until the first half of the 20th century, most Philippine languages were widely written in a variety of ways based on Spanish orthography. In the late 19th century, a number of educated Filipinos began proposing for revising the spelling system used for Tagalog at the time. In 1884, Filipino doctor and student of languages Trinidad Pardo de Tavera published his study on the ancient Tagalog script Contribucion para el Estudio de los Antiguos Alfabetos Filipinos and in 1887, published his essay El Sanscrito en la lengua Tagalog which made use of a new writing system developed by him. Meanwhile, Jose Rizal, inspired by Pardo de Tavera's 1884 work, also began developing a new system of orthography (unaware at first of Pardo de Tavera's own orthography). [38] A major noticeable change in these proposed orthographies was the use of the letter ⟨k⟩ rather than ⟨c⟩ and ⟨q⟩ to represent the phoneme /k/. In 1889, the new bilingual Spanish-Tagalog La España Oriental newspaper, of which Isabelo de los Reyes was an editor, began publishing using the new orthography stating in a footnote that it would "use the orthography recently introduced by... learned Orientalis". This new orthography, while having its supporters, was also not initially accepted by several writers. Soon after the first issue of La España, Pascual H. Poblete 's Revista Católica de Filipina began a series of articles attacking the new orthography and its proponents. A fellow writer, Pablo Tecson was also critical. Among the attacks was the use of the letters "k" and "w" as they were deemed to be of German origin and thus its proponents were deemed as "unpatriotic". The publishers of these two papers would eventually merge as La Lectura Popular in January 1890 and would eventually make use of both spelling systems in its articles. [39] [38] Pedro Laktaw, a schoolteacher, published the first Spanish-Tagalog dictionary using the new orthography in 1890. [39] In April 1890, Jose Rizal authored an article Sobre la Nueva Ortografia de la Lengua Tagalog in the Madrid-based periodical La Solidaridad. In it, he addressed the criticisms of the new writing system by writers like Pobrete and Tecson and the simplicity, in his opinion, of the new orthography. Rizal described the orthography promoted by Pardo de Tavera as "more perfect" than what he himself had developed. [39] The new orthography was however not broadly adopted initially and was used inconsistently in the bilingual periodicals of Manila until the early 20th century. [39] The revolutionary society Kataás-taasan, Kagalang-galang Katipunan ng̃ mg̃á Anak ng̃ Bayan or Katipunan made use of the k-orthography and the letter k featured prominently on many of its flags and insignias. [39] In 1937, Tagalog was selected to serve as basis for the country's national language. In 1940, the Balarílà ng Wikang Pambansâ (English: Grammar of the National Language) of grammarian Lope K. Santos introduced the Abakada alphabet. This alphabet consists of 20 letters and became the standard alphabet of the national language. [40] The orthography as used by Tagalog would eventually influence and spread to the systems of writing used by other Philippine languages (which had been using variants of the Spanish-based system of writing). In 1987, the ABAKADA was dropped and in its place is the expanded Filipino alphabet. Baybayin [ edit] Tagalog was written in an abugida ( alphasyllabary) called Baybayin prior to the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, in the 16th century. This particular writing system was composed of symbols representing three vowels and 14 consonants. Belonging to the Brahmic family of scripts, it shares similarities with the Old Kawi script of Java and is believed to be descended from the script used by the Bugis in Sulawesi. Although it enjoyed a relatively high level of literacy, Baybayin gradually fell into disuse in favor of the Latin alphabet taught by the Spaniards during their rule. There has been confusion of how to use Baybayin, which is actually an abugida, or an alphasyllabary, rather than an alphabet. Not every letter in the Latin alphabet is represented with one of those in the Baybayin alphasyllabary. Rather than letters being put together to make sounds as in Western languages, Baybayin uses symbols to represent syllables. A "kudlit" resembling an apostrophe is used above or below a symbol to change the vowel sound after its consonant. If the kudlit is used above, the vowel is an "E" or "I" sound. If the kudlit is used below, the vowel is an "O" or "U" sound. A special kudlit was later added by Spanish missionaries in which a cross placed below the symbol to get rid of the vowel sound all together, leaving a consonant. Previously, the consonant without a following vowel was simply left out (for example, bundok being rendered as budo), forcing the reader to use context when reading such words. Example: Baybayin is encoded in Unicode version 3. 2 in the range 1700-171F under the name "Tagalog". ka ga nga ta da/ra na pa ba ma ya la wa sa ha vowels ᜔ a ᜀ i e ᜁ u o ᜂ ᜊ᜔ ᜊ bi be ᜊᜒ bu bo ᜊᜓ ᜃ᜔ ᜃ ki ke ᜃᜒ ku ko ᜃᜓᜓ d/r ᜇ᜔ ᜇ di/ri de/re ᜇᜒ du/ru do/ro ᜇᜓ g ᜄ᜔ ᜄ gi ge ᜄᜒ gu go ᜄᜓ h ᜑ᜔ ᜑ hi he ᜑᜒ hu ho ᜑᜓ ᜎ᜔ ᜎ li le ᜎᜒ lu lo ᜎᜓ ᜋ᜔ ᜋ mi me ᜋᜒ mu mo ᜋᜓ ᜈ᜔ ᜈ ni ne ᜈᜒ nu no ᜈᜓ ng ᜅ᜔ ᜅ ngi nge ᜅᜒ ngu ngo ᜅᜓ ᜉ᜔ ᜉ pi pe ᜉᜒ pu po ᜉᜓ ᜐ᜔ ᜐ si se ᜐᜒ su so ᜐᜓ ᜆ᜔ ᜆ ti te ᜆᜒ tu to ᜆᜓ w ᜏ᜔ ᜏ wi we ᜏᜒ wu wo ᜏᜓ y ᜌ᜔ ᜌ yi ye ᜌᜒ yu yo ᜌᜓ Latin alphabet [ edit] Abecedario [ edit] Until the first half of the 20th century, Tagalog was widely written in a variety of ways based on Spanish orthography consisting of 32 letters called ' ABECEDARIO' ( Spanish for "alphabet"): [41] [42] Majuscule Minuscule A Ng B Ñ ñ C c N͠g / Ñg n͠g / ñg Ch ch O o D P E e Q q F f R r G Rr rr H S I i T J j U u K V v L W Ll ll X x M Y N Z z Abakada [ edit] When the national language was based on Tagalog, grammarian Lope K. Santos introduced a new alphabet consisting of 20 letters called ABAKADA in school grammar books called balarilà: [43] [44] [45] Revised alphabet [ edit] In 1987, the Department of Education, Culture and Sports issued a memo stating that the Philippine alphabet had changed from the Pilipino-Tagalog Abakada version to a new 28-letter alphabet [46] [47] to make room for loans, especially family names from Spanish and English: [48] ng and mga [ edit] The genitive marker ng and the plural marker mga (e. Iyan ang mga damit ko. (Those are my clothe s)) are abbreviations that are pronounced nang [naŋ] and mangá [mɐˈŋa]. Ng, in most cases, roughly translates to "of" (ex. Siya ay kapatid ng nanay ko. She is the sibling of my mother) while nang usually means "when" or can describe how something is done or to what extent (equivalent to the suffix -ly in English adverbs), among other uses. Nang si Hudas ay nadulás. —When Judas slipped. Gumising siya nang maaga. —He woke up early. Gumalíng nang todo si Juan dahil nag-ensayo siya. —Juan greatly improved because he practiced. In the first example, nang is used in lieu of the word noong (when; Noong si Hudas ay madulas). In the second, nang describes that the person woke up ( gumising) early ( maaga); gumising nang maaga. In the third, nang described up to what extent that Juan improved ( gumaling), which is "greatly" ( nang todo). In the latter two examples, the ligature na and its variants -ng and -g may also be used ( Gumising na maaga/Maaga ng gumising; Gumaling na todo/Todo ng gumaling). The longer nang may also have other uses, such as a ligature that joins a repeated word: Naghintáy sila nang naghintáy. —They kept on waiting" (a closer calque: "They were waiting and waiting. ") pô/hô and opò/ohò [ edit] The words pô/hô and opò/ohò are traditionally used as polite iterations of the affirmative " oo " ("yes"). It is generally used when addressing elders or superiors such as bosses or teachers. "Pô" and "opò" are specifically used to denote a high level of respect when addressing older persons of close affinity like parents, relatives, teachers and family friends. "Hô" and "ohò" are generally used to politely address older neighbours, strangers, public officials, bosses and nannies, and may suggest a distance in societal relationship and respect determined by the addressee's social rank and not their age. However, "pô" and "opò" can be used in any case in order to express an elevation of respect. Example: " Pakitapon naman pô/ho yung basura. " ("Please throw away the trash. ") Used in the affirmative: Ex: " Gutóm ka na ba? " " Opò/Ohò ". ("Are you hungry yet? " "Yes. ") Pô/Hô may also be used in negation. Ex: " Hindi ko pô/hô alam 'yan. " ("I don't know that. ") Vocabulary and borrowed words [ edit] Tagalog vocabulary is composed mostly of words of native Austronesian origin - most of the words that end with the diphthongs -iw, (e. saliw) and those words that exhibit reduplication (e. halo-halo, patpat, etc. ). However it has a significant number of Spanish loanwords. Spanish is the language that has bequeathed the most loanwords to Tagalog. In pre-Hispanic times, Trade Malay was widely known and spoken throughout Maritime Southeast Asia. Tagalog also includes many loanwords from English, Indian languages ( Sanskrit and Tamil), Chinese languages ( Hokkien, Cantonese, Mandarin), Japanese, Arabic and Persian. Due to trade with Mexico via the Manila galleons from the 16th to the 19th centuries, many words from Nahuatl (Aztec) and Castilian (Spanish) were introduced to Tagalog. The Philippines has long been a melting pot of nations. The islands have been subject to different influences and a meeting point of numerous migrations since the early prehistoric origins of trading activities, especially from the time of the Neolithic Period, the Silk Road, the Tang Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty, the Ryukyu Kingdom, the Spice Route and the Manila Galleon trading periods. This means that the evolution of the language is difficult to reconstruct (although many theories exist). English has borrowed some words from Tagalog, such as abaca, barong, balisong, boondocks, jeepney, Manila hemp, pancit, ylang-ylang, and yaya, although the vast majority of these borrowed words are only used in the Philippines as part of the vocabularies of Philippine English. [ citation needed] Tagalog has contributed several words to Philippine Spanish, like barangay (from balan͠gay, meaning barrio), the abacá, cogon, palay, dalaga etc. Tagalog words of foreign origin [ edit] Cognates with other Philippine languages [ edit] Austronesian comparison chart [ edit] Below is a chart of Tagalog and a number of other Austronesian languages comparing thirteen words. The first Bible in Tagalog, then called Ang Biblia [49] ("the Bible") and now called Ang Dating Biblia [50] ("the Old Bible"), was published in 1905. In 1970, the Philippine Bible Society translated the Bible into modern Tagalog. Even before the Second Vatican Council, devotional materials in Tagalog had been in circulation. There are at least four circulating Tagalog translations of the Bible the Magandang Balita Biblia (a parallel translation of the Good News Bible), which is the ecumenical version the Bibliya ng Sambayanang Pilipino the 1905 Ang Biblia is a more Protestant version the Bagong Sanlibutang Salin ng Banal na Kasulatan ( New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures) When the Second Vatican Council, (specifically the Sacrosanctum Concilium) permitted the universal prayers to be translated into vernacular languages, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines was one of the first to translate the Roman Missal into Tagalog. The Roman Missal in Tagalog was published as early as 1982. Jehovah's Witnesses were printing Tagalog literature at least as early as 1941 [51] and The Watchtower (the primary magazine of Jehovah's Witnesses) has been published in Tagalog since at least the 1950s. New releases are now regularly released simultaneously in a number of languages, including Tagalog. The official website of Jehovah's Witnesses also has some publications available online in Tagalog. [52] The revised bible edition, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, was released in Tagalog on 2019 [53] and it is distributed without charge both printed and online versions. Tagalog is quite a stable language, and very few revisions have been made to Catholic Bible translations. Also, as Protestantism in the Philippines is relatively young, liturgical prayers tend to be more ecumenical. Examples [ edit] Lord's Prayer [ edit] In Tagalog, the Lord's Prayer is exclusively known by its incipit, Amá Namin (literally, "Our Father"). ] Amen. Universal Declaration of Human Rights [ edit] This is Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ( Pángkalahatáng Pagpapahayag ng Karapatáng Pantao) Bawat tao'y isinilang na may layà at magkakapantáy ang tagláy na dangál at karapatán. Silá'y pinagkalooban ng pangangatwiran at budhî na kailangang gamitin nilá sa pagtuturingan nilá sa diwà ng pagkakapatiran. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. [54] Numbers [ edit] The numbers ( mga bilang) in Tagalog language are of two sets. The first set consists of native Tagalog words and the other set are Spanish loanwords. (This may be compared to other East Asian languages, except with the second set of numbers borrowed from Spanish instead of Chinese. ) For example, when a person refers to the number "seven", it can be translated into Tagalog as " pito " or " siyete " (Spanish: siete). Months and days [ edit] Months and days in Tagalog are also localised forms of Spanish months and days. "Month" in Tagalog is buwán (also the word for moon) and "day" is araw (the word also means sun). Unlike Spanish, however, months and days in Tagalog are always capitalised. Time [ edit] Time expressions in Tagalog are also Tagalized forms of the corresponding Spanish. "Time" in Tagalog is panahon, or more commonly oras. Unlike Spanish and English, times in Tagalog are capitalized whenever they appear in a sentence. (José Rizal) One who knows not how to look back from whence he came, will never get to where he is going. Unang kagat, tinapay pa rin. It means:"First bite, still bread. " or "All fluff no substance. " Tao ka nang humarap, bilang tao kitang haharapin. (A proverb in Southern Tagalog that made people aware the significance of sincerity in Tagalog communities. It says, "As a human you reach me, I treat you as a human and never act as a traitor. ") Hulí man daw (raw) at magalíng, nakáhahábol pa rin. If one is behind but capable, one will still be able to catch up. Magbirô ka na sa lasíng, huwág lang sa bagong gising. Make fun of someone drunk, if you must, but never one who has just awakened. Aanhín pa ang damó kung patáy na ang kabayo? What use is the grass if the horse is already dead? Ang sakít ng kalingkingan, ramdám ng buóng katawán. The pain in the pinkie is felt by the whole body. (In a group, if one goes down, the rest follow. ) Nasa hulí ang pagsisisi. Regret is always in the end. Pagkáhabà-habà man ng prusisyón, sa simbahan pa rin ang tulóy. The procession may stretch on and on, but it still ends up at the church. (In romance: refers to how certain people are destined to be married. In general: refers to how some things are inevitable, no matter how long you try to postpone it. ) Kung 'dî mádaán sa santóng dasalan, daanin sa santóng paspasan. If it cannot be got through holy prayer, get it through blessed force. (In romance and courting: santóng paspasan literally means 'holy speeding' and is a euphemism for sexual intercourse. It refers to the two styles of courting by Filipino boys: one is the traditional, protracted, restrained manner favored by older generations, which often featured serenades and manual labor for the girl's family; the other is upfront seduction, which may lead to a slap on the face or a pregnancy out of wedlock. The second conclusion is known as pikot or what Western cultures would call a ' shotgun marriage '. This proverb is also applied in terms of diplomacy and negotiation. ) See also [ edit] Dambana Abakada alphabet Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino Filipino alphabet Filipino orthography Tagalog Wikipedia References [ edit] ^ Philippine Statistics Authority 2014, pp. 29–34. ^ Tagalog at Ethnologue (22nd ed., 2019) ^ Filipino at Ethnologue (18th ed., 2015) ^ Hammarström, Harald; Forkel, Robert; Haspelmath, Martin, eds. But these days Filipinos are less boastful. Three decades of decline in the share of Filipinos who speak the language, and the deteriorating proficiency of those who can manage some English, have eroded one of the country's advantages in the global economy. Call-centres complain that they reject nine-tenths of otherwise qualified job applicants, mostly college graduates, because of their poor command of English. The idea of making it look like one take is genius, the cinematography is by far the best of the year, as it immerses you deeply into the film and the characters that make you almost feel like you are there on this journey. The film also has a moving ending that had me mesmerised by the time the credits rolled, that is due to the cinematography and the performances given in the film which were very strong, ending on one of the most nicest shots I have seen this year with a quiet moment that says so much when speaking so little. The production, and costume design were also fantastic and the score only enhances your immersion which is exactly what you want in a score.

Overall 1917 is a film that I found used its cinematography in fantastic fashion and creates a war film that stands up with some of the best, due to its incredible 3rd act. The weak parts to the film however, were there wasn't the greatest character building, especially in moments early on in the film, where I was supposed to feel some kind of emotion I didn't because the character development early on isn't the greatest. I believe as the film progressed this issue eventually sorted itself out which was nice, and also there were quiet moments in the film that felt they dragged on for way too long and needed to be shortened down a little to make a tighter packaged film.

Im from Germany and when I hear the stories of my grandparents they all went through shit on every side. War and hate is so horrible! There is one story though that has touched me the most. A girl from my school. Every school visits the concentration camps. When she was there an old man told his story of how he had survived the holocaust. She broke down in tears ( a lot did) but then she continued to tell him the story of her great grandmother. She said that her great grandmother was being deported to a camp by train. She was pregnant. She gave birth on the train. A German soldier was there. He took the baby and hid it. She went off to Die in the camp but that soldier managed to smuggle the baby out and he and his wife raised it as their own.

I mean this is just my opinion so it's probably irrelevant to most other people, but I really don't think denouncing the Gloria of this setting for being more minor or solemn than most others is totally appropriate. Considering that the Gloria is obviously meant to praise God's Glory, I think a more reverent tone is definitely called for at times. Personally, I can't really imagine pleading to God for mercy with regard to humanity's sins with a bright smile on my face 😂. Also I'm not looking for a fight this is just my opinion lol.
