Brief Biography of Bryan Stevenson Stevenson grew up in a rural community in Delaware. His grandmother, with whom he was very close, was the daughter of slaves in Virginia. Stevensons father worked in a processing plant and his mother worked a civilian job at an air force base. His family were members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he sang and played piano and his mother directed the choir. Stevenson majored in philosophy at Eastern University and he went onto study at Harvard Law in a joint program with the Kennedy School of Public Policy. While interning one summer at the Southern Prisoners Defense Committee (Now the Southern Center for Human Rights) he developed a passion for prison justice and for fighting against the death penalty. In 1985, he moved to Atlanta to work for the SPDC. To meet growing demand for legal aid to death row inmates in Alabama, Stevenson and his friend Eva Ansley moved to Montgomery to start the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in 1989. For decades, EJI has defended inmates on death row, challenged inhumane prison conditions, and fought for improvement of the juvenile justice system. Stevenson has argued before the Supreme Court in several cases, including in the high profile 2012 case Miller vs. Alabama, in which the Court banned life sentences for juvenile offenders. With the support of EJI, Stevenson has blocked the executions of over 100 death row inmates. He has traveled throughout the country and around the world to speak about the American criminal justice system, prison justice, the death penalty, and racial and economic equality. Historical Context of Just Mercy In Just Mercy, Stevenson describes several periods in American history in order to show the relationship between those periods and the modern penal system. For example, Stevenson recounts in detail the political and social situation during the Reconstruction era and how progress toward justice for African-Americans was reversed during the post-Reconstruction era. He describes the evolution of Jim Crow laws and their legacy up through the Civil Rights movement, and he references the array of civil action, brutality, and legal battles that occurred during the Civil Rights Movement. Stevenson points to the reinstitution of the death penalty in 1975 as an important turning point, and he describes how the changing political and social climates of the 1980s, 90s, and 2000s impacted trends in media coverage, social views, and the legal and criminal justice system. Throughout the book, he zooms in on specific historical periods related to featured legal cases. Other Books Related to Just Mercy Just Mercy is one of many books published in recent years that explore the social and historical roots of mass incarceration. The most popular and widely discussed of these is Michelle Alexanders The New Jim Crow. Like Stevenson, Alexander argues that oppressive structures of the past, such as slavery and Jim Crow laws, have transformed into the mass incarceration of black men. Another book on this subject is Ruth Wilson Gilmores Golden Gulag, which discusses the problem of mass incarceration in California, and Angela Davis argues for the abolition of the prison system in Are Prisons Obsolete? Within Just Mercy, Stevenson references the writing of W. E. B. Du Bois, the African-American writer and activist. Du Bois was one of many early twentieth century African-American writers who exposed the reality of racial oppression through literature: others include Booker T. Washington, Langston Hughes, and Marcus Garvey. Stevenson also frequently references To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lees novel about a rape accusation against an innocent black man. In a sense, Just Mercy is related to the modern genre of legal nonfiction, which focuses on the exoneration of the innocent. An example of a work of legal nonfiction is John Grishams The Innocent Man. I saw "Just Mercy" a few days ago at the Philadelphia Film Festival and was blown away by the film. and I consider it to be one of the best movies I've seen in recent years. I could easily see the picture receiving several Oscar nominations- especially for acting. Imagine my suprise when I looked on IMDB and saw a score of 5.6 and some negative reviews! I am not exactly sure what this is all about and perhaps it's because there are some angry pro-capital punishment folks or some who simply hate a film with a mostly black cast. All I know is that the film is a quality production and kept my interest throughout.
The story is based on the work of Bryan Stevenson, a Harvard graduate who chose to move to Alabama and work for a small salary to help examine the convictions of men on death who in some cases were not guilty at all. How could anyone NOT applaud this sort of thing?
Overall, a brilliantly written film that made me sad and angry. and I love when a film effects me that way. The acting was top-notch, the story magnificent and the writing amazing. Just ignore all the negativity and see this one. you'll be happy you did. As for me, I'd consider this perhaps the best American film of the 's THAT good.
Critics Consensus Just Mercy dramatizes a real-life injustice with solid performances, a steady directorial hand, and enough urgency to overcome a certain degree of earnest advocacy. 84% TOMATOMETER Total Count: 243 99% Audience Score Verified Ratings: 9, 900 Just Mercy Ratings & Reviews Explanation Tickets & Showtimes The movie doesn't seem to be playing near you. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Rob Morgan, Tim Blake Nelson, Rafe Spall, and Brie Larson. It tells the true story of Walter McMillian, who, with the help of young defense attorney Bryan Stevenson, appeals his murder conviction. The film is based on the memoir of the same name, written by Stevenson. [4] Just Mercy had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2019, and was theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 25, 2019. The film received positive reviews from critics, and Foxx received a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards. Plot [ edit] In 1989, idealistic young Harvard law graduate Bryan Stevenson travels to Alabama hoping to help fight for poor people who cannot afford proper legal representation. He meets with Eva Ansley and founds the Equal Justice Initiative, then travels to a prison to meet its death row inmates. He meets Walter "Johnny D. McMillian, an African-American man who was convicted of the 1986 murder of Ronda Morrison. Bryan looks over the evidence in the case and discovers it hinges entirely on the testimony of convicted felon Ralph Myers, who provided a highly self-contradictory testimony in exchange for a lighter sentence in his own pending trial. Bryan's first move is to ask prosecutor Tommy Chapman for aid, but Chapman dismisses him without even looking at his notes. Bryan next asks McMillian family friend Darnell Houston to testify that he was with a witness who corroborated Myers' testimony the day of the murder, which would cause the prosecution's case to fall apart. When Bryan submits Darnell's testimony, police arrest him for perjury. While Bryan is able to get the perjury charges dismissed, Darnell is intimidated into refusing to testify in court. Bryan then approaches Myers himself, who eventually admits that his testimony was coerced after police played to his fear of burning and threatened to have him executed by electric chair. Bryan appeals to the local court to grant Walter a retrial. and successfully convinces Myers to recant his testimony on the stand, but the judge nevertheless refuses to grant a retrial. Distraught, Bryan vents his frustrations about the case to Eva. He appears on 60 Minutes to rally public support in favor of Walter, then appeals to the Supreme Court of Alabama. The Supreme Court overturns the circuit court's decision, and grants Walter his retrial. Bryan then motions to have the charges dismissed entirely. He confronts Chapman at his home and tries to convince him to join him in his motion; Chapman angrily ejects him from his property. The day of the motion comes, and Bryan appeals to the judge. Chapman agrees to join him in his motion, the case is dismissed, and Walter is finally reunited with his family. An epilogue notes that Bryan and Eva continue to fight for justice to the present day. Walter remained friends with Bryan until his death in 2013. A follow-up investigation into Morrison's death confirmed Walter's innocence and posited that a white man was likely responsible; the case has never been solved. Cast [ edit] Michael B.
